The newly passed “Food Safety Modernization Act” became law on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. These new federal regulations on food safety have broad implications for the food industry. The new laws gives the FDA increased authority over food recalls, including authority to inspect records related to food and affects any factory, warehouse, or importer that manufactures, processes, packs, or stores food. Full implementation will take years, but some provisions are effective immediately and many others are effective within the next 6 to 18 months.
